My work is a series of observations, critiques, fears, and hopes, which I attempt to present through allegory, imagery, and text. A portrait of our disenchanted, techno-media saturated, war-torn society presented in the divine light of the Masters. I draw from a vast pool of imagery and iconography that is already ingrained into our minds, and I arrange it to suit my needs. My imagery borrows from the Masters of the Renaissance, heraldry, freemasonry, religious iconography, science, technology, mythology, and the always present war machine. It’s a juxtaposition of centuries-old ideas with modern interpretations. My images are portraits of our society, as it wavers, careless and disaster-prone, constantly in search of those faint glimmers of hope beaming in from the television. We are inundated by images of war, famine, and disaster. All of which are broadcast to us live, on a glowing screen. We take it all in, the misery and suffering of millions, careless and unaffected, waiting for something to distract us from our plight. But who can say all is lost? Certainly not I. Beneath it all runs an undercurrent of hope and longing. It’s the only thing that keeps us going, the hope that something better is within our reach. It’s that very glimmer of hope, surrounded by hopelessness, that I try to portray. I strive to create a sense of divinity to light the darkness, and ultimately, to give myself hope. |
